Is it just me, or is the horror genre going seriously down-hill lately? That was my opinion for a long time, with previous let downs including Scream, Paranormal Activity, and not to mention the final Saw movie which I'm sure used pink blood. Anyway, I might be a little critical, as I am an avid watcher of the classic horror movies that never fail to make my hair stand on end.
But, and this is a big but, (hence the underline)... If you haven't seen the film Orphan yet, I suggest that you should grab some popcorn, turn your lights off, shut your curtains, and prepare yourself for one hell of a creepy film!
One of my best mates told me about Orphan, and as she knows how much I love my horror films, said it was a 'must see.' She, however, isn't a lover of the horror genre, so I did have my suspicions about how scary it was going to be, as it takes a lot to keep me interested when it comes to horror films, my belief about them is pretty much, no gore = no enjoyment. To my surprise though, Orphan is one of the best horror films I have seen in a while, and it didn't even need to use gore to keep me glued to the TV screen.
I think one of the reasons why the film is so unbelievably good is that you really feel an intimate interaction with the characters which adds to your involvement and sympathy as they sadly lost their third child, so choose to adopt from an orphanage, thinking that another child is what is missing from their life. After the adoption, however, their family begins to fall apart, when the adopted child, Esther, turns out to be nothing like what they previously thought.
If you don't believe me, just take a look at this picture:
I'm not going to spoil the film for you, because I really do believe it is worth a watch, but let me tell you this, the twist towards the end of the film is amazing, and left me totally baffled, which doesn't happen very often.
The storyline is perfect, however, with a perfect family as the main protagonists, and unlike the typical horror, Orphan really lets you get involved with the family's life and makes you feel like you know them personally. It doesn't simply just jump into an unrealistic relationship between a couple, where you just know that one of them is going to get their head cut off at some point.
When the cracks start appearing in the family's life, you can't help but feel emotional for them, and the wife especially, who had her suspicions about Ester right from the start. When Esther starts showing her true colours, by hurting the other children, and turning the husband and wife against eachother, the film really does have you on the edge of your seat. How could a nine year old girl be so scary? When you see it for yourself, you will definitely believe me. It really is one of those films that makes you scared of what's behind your shower curtain!
So give this one a chance, I'm pretty sure it won't let you down! Just remember, this film is not for the faint hearted, but if you really want to be hiding behind a cushion, this is the film for you.

Glitter
